For the past few months, I’ve been emailing search and technical updates directly to colleagues and clients one by one. As useful as those notes were, individual emails quickly become unwieldy with formatting, lost links, and no simple way to opt out. I’m shifting these dispatches to a structured newsletter format to keep things readable, organized, and respectful of your inbox.

There is so much written right now about SEO, GEO, AEO, and whatever acronym drops next. When you are balancing site maintenance, updates, and RFQ follow-ups, staying on top of every shift in search practices isn't just exhausting—it's impossible.
Here is the data point worth paying attention to this month
0.48% —The total share of manufacturing website traffic currently coming directly from AI search, according to a recent Semrush study.

Where Did the Traffic Go?
These trends have had an impact.
- AI overviews favor third-party sources. For component and equipment searches, AI summaries disproportionately pull citations from distributors, industry directories, and trade aggregators rather than manufacturers' websites.
- The "Shortlist" Shift. In extended B2B sales cycles, technical buyers increasingly use generative engines to build their initial specification requirements and vendor shortlists. Once vendors are identified, buyers bypass the search engine entirely and navigate directly to the vendor’s site or reach out via email.

A drop or plateau in organic referral clicks doesn't mean your pipeline is drying up.

Raw web traffic has always been an imperfect metric—particularly today, with network data from Cloudflare showing that bots account for nearly 65% of all web requests. In my own work, I have found that traffic is down, but engagement is up. RFQs have remained steady. This suggests that the lost traffic was not potential customers.

What to Check this Week
Because AI models lean heavily on aggregator data to compile B2B recommendations, focus your audit on your third-party footprint,
- Pick your top three revenue-driving product lines.
- Check where your business is listed across primary industrial trade directories (ThomasNet, Kompass, and your specific trade associations).
- Verify that contact information, part numbers, technical specifications, and RFQ direct links are consistent across these third-party profiles.

An Executive Summary to Share
I’m currently putting together a 1-page Executive Translation Sheet based on this B2B survey data—designed to help executives understand why search visibility matters even when immediate analytics clicks look flat. If you’d like an advance copy, reply directly to this email with "Summary" and I’ll send it over.
