Why I use AI images
At their best, AI images are creations that emerge from the human imagination. AI images should not replace human creativity, but support and extend it. We’ve all seen images that fall short of this ideal. Nonetheless, if we are thoughtful using this new tool we can expand the expression of human ideas.
Ethical Considerations and Creator Compensation
My approach to using AI images is rooted in respect for creative professionals. I am committed to compensating creatives for their work and contributions. This means:
- Selecting AI image platforms that have transparent compensation models
- Paying for image licenses to support digital creators
- Recognizing the intellectual and technical effort behind AI image generation
For these reasons, I’m purchasing AI images from Adobe Stock. They have outlined their AI image policy, and their commitment to fair compensation. They aim to put AI tools in the hands of creators. I believe that Adobe is motivated to get this right, since creators are their core market.
Our generative AI policy puts the power of these tools in the hands of artists, and enables those contributors to earn royalties for licensed content according to our royalty guidelines—the same way as it does for other content.
—Adobe AI Image Policy, December 2025
To be clear, I do not want to steal work from anyone. Adobe asks creators to certify that they own the rights and model releases to the images they upload. This isn’t foolproof, people may lie. If I learn than any image I’ve used is pirated, I will remove it immediately.
Human Judgement and AI Slop
In the current excitement with new tools, we have seen people spin up some pretty strange creations. At its best, AI is a tool, not a replacement for critical thinking and creative judgment. The human creator should remain the ultimate arbiter of quality and usefulness. Keeping a discerning human in the loop can prevent carelessly generated “AI slop”
Transparency in AI-Generated Content
I promise to label AI art that I use here. My aim is to ensure transparency and attribution.
Evolving Best Practices
Like everyone else, I’m doing my best to think through the ethics and best practices of using this new technology. I expect my practices to evolve as my understanding of AI and its ramifications improves. My hope is that when the AI hype dies down, these new tools will be in the hands of creators, expanding their market and influence.
